About Stawell
Stawell is a beautiful rural town bustling with energy and scenic views of neighbouring mountains. It is ideal for families with three local primary schools, a large well resourced secondary college, a leisure centre with a heated indoor pool and busy shopping centre. Exploring the magnificent Grampians National Park, visiting the region's first class wineries, sporting clubs and the festivals all contribute to making Stawell a unique and enjoyable place to live.
Born of the gold rush, this mining town had over 20,000 prospectors in the mid 1850s. Since the reopening of gold mines in the town in 1984, the town has become the leading gold producer in Victoria. The current Gold Mine is the main employer and the town is of around 7000 people.Stawell has a strong commercial focus, being the gateway to the popular holiday destinations, a service centre for grazing and cropping agriculture and it also has a number of industries including gold mining and the numerous associated industries, tyre retreading, the Aunde textiles Mill, and brick making. Stawell hosts a large number of annual and regular community events that make it a vibrant community to live in. Every Easter the city stages the world's richest professional footrace, the famous Stawell Gift, - a traditional event that attracts thousands to the town and is seen by millions coast to coast on television. After more than a century, the event’s popularity still grows.
